Local Insider Guide
Welcome to the Palace Hotel & Salida, Colorado For the curious, the adventurous, and the ones who came for a weekend and started looking at real estate. Red brick storefronts. A mountain at the end of every street. People who look like they know something you don't. That's Salida. Population just under 6,000. Named a Colorado Creative District. Home to more artists per capita than almost anywhere in the state. One of Colorado's best small cities — and one of its best-kept secrets, though the secret is getting harder to keep. The Palace Hotel Before you explore the town, start here. The Palace Hotel was built in 1909 by Ambrose Ramsey, when Salida was a railroad town and the Denver & Rio Grande stopped out front. Ramsey poured a thick concrete foundation below the basement — the same year as the San Francisco earthquake — because he intended this building to outlast everything around it. He was right. When the Palace Hotel opened, the Salida Mail reported that "Mr. Ramsey's taste in furnishing these rooms is the marvel of it all. Only the most expensive material has been used." Forty-four sleeping rooms. Brass-trimmed iron beds. Hot and cold running water. Fifty cents to a dollar a night. The Palace Hotel today offers boutique short-term rental suites that sleep two to six — each with its own character, all with the bones of 1909 beneath them. Book a suite and you're sleeping in the same building where railroad men, traveling salesmen, and early Colorado pioneers spent the night. The town has changed considerably since then. The building hasn't changed much at all. The Town Salida sits at 7,036 feet in the heart of the Upper Arkansas Valley, surrounded by fourteen-thousand-foot peaks and bisected by the Arkansas River — one of the most famous whitewater rivers in the country. The Collegiate Peaks (Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Oxford, Princeton — yes, really) rise to the west. S Mountain, with the giant white S on its face that lights up at night, watches over the town from the south. On a clear day, which is most days, the light here is extraordinary. The downtown is compact, walkable, and almost entirely locally owned. No chains. No formula. Just a grid of red brick blocks that feel like they mean something, because they do.
The Arkansas River through Salida runs class I–II — perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and tubing on a summer afternoon. Riverside Park, across F Street from the Palace Hotel, puts the river within easy reach of downtown. For whitewater, the Royal Gorge section downstream is world-class. Brown's Canyon National Monument, just south of town, offers a different kind of quiet — cottonwood canyons, bighorn sheep, and some of the best fishing in the state.
S Mountain is the obvious first mountain bike ride or hike — steep, short, and rewarding, with a view of the whole valley from the top. You can ride for miles and find the right trail to challenge your abilities. The Methodist Mountain trail system offers longer routes with solitude. Monarch Crest Trail, accessible from the top of Monarch Pass, is one of Colorado's great mountain bike rides — a high-alpine ridge crossing with views into four directions. For something more contemplative, the Rainbow Trail circles the Sangre de Cristo range to the east, miles of singletrack through aspen and pine with almost no one on it.
In Town Salida's downtown is made for walking slowly. Galleries and studios line F Street and its cross streets — the Creative District designation isn't marketing, it's an accurate description of a town where art is genuinely embedded in daily life. The First Friday art walk draws the whole community out every month.
The hot springs deserve their own mention. Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center is the largest indoor hot springs pool in Colorado — fed by natural geothermal water, open year-round, and remarkably uncrowded compared to better-known springs elsewhere in the state. It's across the river from downtown, a five-minute walk from the Palace Hotel.
Food and Drink Salida punches well above its weight for a town its size. A few anchors worth knowing: Amicas Pizza — wood-fired, beloved, the kind of place that has been there long enough to become part of the town's identity. Soulcraft Brewing — one of several excellent breweries in town, with a taproom that feels like someone actually designed it. Currents Restaurant — riverside setting, locally sourced, the kind of dinner you talk about later. Shavano— French farm to table-style bistro with roomy patio, Moonlight Pizza — late-night, casual, reliable. The farmers market runs Saturday mornings in Riverside Park through the summer — worth orienting your weekend around if you're in town.
Getting Here By Car From Denver: Take US-285 south through Fairplay and over Trout Creek Pass, then US-50 west into Salida. Approximately 2.5 hours. The drive through South Park is one of Colorado's best, with wide-open ranchland giving way to mountain passes. From Colorado Springs: Take US-50 west through Cañon City and the Royal Gorge. Approximately 2 hours. This route follows the Arkansas River upstream — the canyon section is spectacular. From Pueblo: Take US-50 west directly. Approximately 1.5 hours. From Gunnison/Crested Butte: Take US-50 east over Monarch Pass. Approximately 1 hour. The pass itself is worth stopping for. By Air The closest major airport is Colorado Springs (COS), approximately 2 hours. Denver International (DEN) is approximately 3 hours. There is no commercial air service into Salida itself, which is part of why the valley has stayed the way it is. When to Come Summer (June–August) is peak season — the river is running, the trails are clear, the farmers market is full, and the light lasts until nine o'clock. Book ahead. Fall (September–October) is the argument for coming when everyone else has left. The aspen groves above town turn gold in late September. The crowds thin. The air sharpens. It's the locals' favorite time, which tells you something. Winter (November–March) is quieter and colder, but Monarch Mountain ski area is 23 miles up US-50 — a small, family-owned ski area with no lift lines and genuine old-Colorado character. The Palace Hotel and the hot springs are at their best when it's cold outside. Spring (April–May) brings mud, snowmelt, and the kind of light that makes everything look newly arrived. The Arkansas starts running hard. The trails open gradually. It's not the most polished version of Salida, but it's an honest one. A Note on Salida Every year, more people discover this town. Some of them are passing through on their way to somewhere else and make a wrong turn into downtown. Some of them come deliberately, for the river or the trails or because someone told them about it. Some of them are thinking about moving here, or have already decided and are just looking for confirmation. What they all tend to find is the same thing: a small Colorado city that has figured out how to be genuinely itself. It hasn't been overrun. It hasn't been smoothed out. The artists are still here. The river is still here. The Palace Hotel is still here, chandelier and all, exactly where Ambrose Ramsey left it in 1909. Come see it while it's still a secret. Or at least while it still feels like one. The Palace Hotel is located at 204 N. F Street, Salida, Colorado 81201 — across from Riverside Park, one block from the Arkansas River, steps from downtown.
